Young novelist Rama travels from Paris to the northern French city of Saint-Omer to attend the trial of Laurence Coly, a young Senegalese woman accused of murdering her 15-month-old daughter by leaving her on a beach to be swept away by the tide. As she listens to the testimony, Rama finds that the case resonates deeply with her own experiences of motherhood, identity, and her relationship with her immigrant mother. Interweaving themes of mother-daughter bonds, immigrant alienation, and postcolonial trauma, director Alice Diop’s searing debut feature won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2022 Venice Film Festival and was selected as France’s entry for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.
