The Semester takes place at Arcadia, an off-the-grid yurt village in the heart of the Adirondacks. Want to see the world in a different way? Then check out anthropology! As an anthropology student, the whole human world, past and present, will be your subject. You will get the tools you need to understand all aspects of the human experience, from our DNA to the languages we speak to the artifacts we make, from the beginnings of primate evolution to the contemporary era of rich cultural diversity.

Our majors and minors choose from a broad range of courses in archaeology, cultural anthropology, linguistic anthropology, and biological anthropology. Our majors also complete an experiential learning component which can involve study abroad, independent research, community-based learning, or an internship. Our graduates put their anthropological skills to use in many different settings: schools and universities, government agencies, private companies, and non-profit organizations.

Our faculty members have done research in Egypt, India, Indonesia, Namibia, Sudan, and upstate New York, and we mentor student research in many other places both at home and abroad. Our teaching and research laboratories house several collections of artifacts as well as human skeletal materials and ancient bone and fossil casts for hands-on study. We hope to see you in our classes!

Biology majors at St. Lawrence University have access to an exciting variety of options. As a student, you can utilize laboratories in the LEED Gold-Certified, Johnson Hall of Science. You can study outdoors in the woods or on a local lake in northern New York, or even in another country. Do you want to conduct real-world research and also enjoy the liberal arts college experience? You can definitely do so in the Biology department at St. Lawrence University, with some of the best faculty in their fields.

Students in our biology program study the breadth of the life sciences: from ecology and organismal biology to cellular and molecular biology. A biology degree from St. Lawrence can lead to careers in environmental conservation, science education, research, medicine, physical therapy, and other health industries.

St. Lawrence has also developed quite the reputation among graduate schools and health professional programs like Syracuse, Dartmouth, Albany College of Pharmacy and Penn, as well as biotechnology companies. St. Lawrence has agreements with the SUNY Buffalo School of Pharmacy, the Nursing Program at NYU, the Physician’s Assistant Program at Clarkson, and the Physical Therapy Program at Clarkson for students to pursue a combined degree.

Chemists understand the natural world through the structure and bonding of atoms. From their first course in chemistry, St. Lawrence students learn through hands-on experiences in the classroom and cutting-edge labs. They pursue independent research projects with faculty mentors to discover new medications, forms of renewable energy, and insights into the structure of proteins. Many students present their results at regional and national conferences. Our chemistry program builds from its liberal arts setting to educate the whole person, and the National Science Foundation (NSF) couldn’t agree more, providing us with a grant to create the new Liberal Arts Science Scholars program.

Our chemistry majors have gone on to successful careers and prestigious graduate schools, including: Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Columbia University, Cornell University, PerkinElmer, University of California, Berkeley, University of California San Diego, University of Washington, University of Wisconsin–Madison, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Virginia, Vanderbilt University, Vertex Pharmaceuticals and more.

The Office of Corporate & Foundation (C&F) Relations builds and maintains relationships with corporate, foundation, and government funders for projects that advance St. Lawrence University’s mission and institutional priorities. A key role of the C&F Grants Office is to assist faculty members secure external funding for their teaching and scholarly endeavors. We provide assistance with identifying potential funding sources; developing, editing, and submitting proposals; and administering awards. We also serve as the institutional “sponsored research” office and UWC Campus Liaison Office.

The economics curriculum is designed to familiarize the student with economic theory and “the economic way of thinking,” to provide knowledge about economic institutions, to foster the development of skills in applying economic analysis to contemporary issues, and to create a foundation for critical thinking, problem-solving, and intelligent engaged citizenship. The major provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to help solve today’s most challenging social and economic problems at a local, regional or global scale.

A major in economics opens up a wide range of career opportunities: from jobs in banking, finance, real estate, consulting, and insurance, to teaching, to entrepreneurial work in business or the non-profit sector. It also provides great preparation for law school or MBA or public policy graduate programs. Fields such as investment, finance, and banking are dotted with St. Lawrence alumni, who in the true Laurentian spirit, love working with our students, often leading to opportunities after graduation. A unique off-campus study program, the New York City Semester, also offers additional hands-on learning experiences that are especially valuable for economics majors.

Students who major in English at St. Lawrence develop critical reading and writing skills, explore diverse cultural backgrounds and historical periods represented by literary works, produce (and sometimes publish!) their own creative work, and examine the relationships between literary art and life. They go on to apply this knowledge in a variety of careers: writing, editing, journalism, education, law, advertising, communications, public relations, and business.

Students can choose to major either in creative writing or literary studies. The major is founded on a fundamental belief that writing and literature infuse and enrich one another. For this reason, literary studies majors who focus on authors such as Jane Austen, William Shakespeare, and Toni Morrison also have the opportunity to write fiction, essays, and poems. Creative writing majors, meanwhile, work in two genres (including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and journalism) and also study topics such as environmental writing and multi-ethnic literature from across the United States.

Additional opportunities that await English majors include off-campus study (London and New York City are popular), an array of internship possibilities, student-run publications, summer fellowships to support independent literary study and creative writing, and honors projects to complete extended critical studies and book-length creative manuscripts. The writer studying literature develops a critical acumen that fosters sophistication of technique; the literary critic studying creative writing achieves an understanding of the ways an author thinks about craft. Our English department courses help students explore cultural backgrounds and values, examine the bonds between life and art, and discover the liberating qualities of the imagination.

Film and Representation Studies is an interdisciplinary program designed to introduce students to the techniques of film analysis and the history and theory of the cinema, as well as to critically approach the nature of “representation” in audiovisual texts such television programming, advertising, music video, news and others. Program goals are to offer students courses that support a critical engagement with audio-visual media. Among the proficiencies Film and Representational Studies courses seek to develop are:

• An ability to critically deconstruct, analyze and interpret visual, audio-visual and Web-based texts. These include cinema, television, Web pages and other emergent media, advertising, news, music videos, multi-media, and other fictional, non-fictional and hybrid categories.

• An understanding of the politics of cultural representation around the categories of race, class, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, nationality and cultural heritage.

• A working understanding of theoretical perspectives that can be brought to bear on cinema and other forms of representations, including humanistic, feminist, Marxist, postcolonial, structural and post-structural, psychoanalytic, semiotic and audience reception.

• A deeper understanding of the craft of filmmaking through experiences with filmmaking.

Courses are offered within the program as well as in related departments.

The First-Gen Initiative was developed to both support and celebrate first-generation college students (students who are the first in their family to go to college). First-gen students make a valuable contribution to St. Lawrence University, enriching the community by bringing under-represented perspectives to higher education and reflecting one of the highest ideals of college in the United States, the expansion of opportunity for young people of great talent and hard work.

Being a first-gen student is something to celebrate, but it also comes with unique challenges, since first-gen students cannot lean on family knowledge about what the college experience looks like to help them navigate the complexities of college life. First-gen students often do not know the language, the codes, and the practices that children of college-educated parents learn at a young age.

The First-Gen Initiative exists to help level the playing field. Our First-Year Program is one of the oldest living-learning programs in the country, helping students make successful transitions from high school to college, intellectually and socially, since 1987. Geology is the intensive study of earth systems, the lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere. It is a field-based science applied to questions related to the identification of the resources needed for modern civilization, environmental contamination/remediation, natural disasters, climatic change, and the history and evolution of the Earth and life.

Geology majors at St. Lawrence spend a sizable portion of their time in the field, both locally and on field trips to classic locations in the U.S. and abroad designed to supplement classroom instruction with real-world experience. Graduates of our program travel far and wide and serve society and the profession in numerous ways including as part of the academic, government, and private sectors where they work as researchers, regulators, advisers/consultants, and academic professionals. Dedicated alumni return to campus for the St. Lawrence University Geology Alumni Conference every third year to mentor students on graduate school and career opportunities.

The Global Dialogue Center (GDC), located at 84 Park St., was created in 2013 as a student–faculty collaboration to promote interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, and globally engaged dialogue.
Originally supported by an SLU Innovation Grant, it has served as a meeting space for student groups such as Weave News, GLOCAL Journal, and Amnesty International, and as a host for “Flash Seminars” and spontaneous discussions on urgent global topics.

As the world seems to shrink almost daily with the growth of modern transportation and communication systems, it’s more important than ever that people think, and learn, globally. Since its creation in 2000, St. Lawrence’s pathbreaking global studies program has been looking at world topics, issues and conflicts from a multi-disciplinary perspective in order to put them in their largest contexts and build innovative solutions to global and local problems.

Graduates with this major are prepared go into a wide variety of fields such as policy, non-governmental organizations, law, public health, education, journalism, advocacy, all with an ability to look at the big picture.

History is more than a catalog of events and actors; it is an ongoing process of discovery and interpretation. All facets of human experience have a historical dimension — the power struggles of monarchs and presidents; the working lives of farmers, sailors and seamstresses; the spiritual lives of people who were enslaved; the cultural assumptions of colonizers; the intimate relationships of families, to name only a few. Even the telling of history has a historical dimension, since historical interpretations change over time, and historians often disagree about exactly how things happened and why.

The variety of sources through which we understand history can encompass the full range of human expression as well—written documents, clothing, household items, artwork, advertisements, songs, buildings and public monuments, among others. By studying primary materials and divergent interpretations of history, students acquire and develop analytical and expository skills.

The study of history affords many additional benefits. It expands and enriches our understanding of the diversity of human lives over time across such boundaries as gender, culture, class, race, age, region, and religion. It helps us think about how and why the world we know came to be and about our own places in it. History students learn about the past and develop skills in and beyond the classroom. They engage in community-based learning, conduct independent research projects, complete summer internships, and study abroad.

Our graduates have gone on to careers in banking, business, communications, education, finance, government, information technology, journalism, law, medicine, politics, public health, public history, and numerous other fields. International Student Services supports the intellectual, ethical, personal, and social development of St. Lawrence's international students as they explore their place and purpose as engaged learners in a diverse and interdependent University and world. For fall semester of 2023, we are a community of 239 undergraduate and graduate students from 80 nations. Our office primarily works with non-immigrant students on F-1 and J-1 visa, however, we also serve as a resource for global citizens from within and outside the U.S. From orientation till post-graduation, we work collaboratively with our students so that they can achieve their goals as students and as civically engaged learners of this global world.

Mathematics, computer science, cybersecurity, data science, and statistics—distinct programs that share a single home at St. Lawrence—are each deeply rooted in the Liberal Arts. Within each of these majors, introductory courses foster the critical thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving skills necessary for all disciplines while upper-level courses sharpen these skills and introduce students to the deeper world of the majors.

At St. Lawrence, you’ll get great hands-on experience through courses and research opportunities with classmates and professors. Our department emphasizes conceptual learning, allowing students to transfer the skills they learn in one discipline to another, creating well-rounded problem solvers. The five disciplines have many points of intersection, so it is not uncommon for students to concentrate in more than one of our disciplines through major/minor combinations.

Upon completion of their degree, our majors are prepared to either go on to graduate school or into the work-force. Graduates have pursued advanced degrees in each of our five majors, along with related fields like engineering, finance, and business. In the work force, students are prepared for a wide variety of careers; recent examples include medical research, financial management, software development, information technology, actuarial science, and sports analytics. A major in Performance and Communication Arts will give you the tools to better understand and communicate with others, personally, professionally, and socially.

Theatre studies engage students in critical inquiry into previous performances and previous performance texts, as well as artistic engagement with the craft of producing original texts and performances. Performance studies, a broader term, includes theatre studies, but also encompasses a broader array of performance behaviors, including (among others) the performance of gender, the performance of self in everyday life, the performance of texts other than plays, ritual performances, and political performances, both mainstream and activist.

Rhetorical studies focus on the use of symbols to alter attitudes and induce others to act in a particular manner, and students engaged in rhetorical studies are challenged to critically examine previous attempts at persuasion, as well as to creatively enter into the production of original persuasive messages. Communication studies, a broader term, includes rhetorical studies, but also encompasses a broader array of communication behaviors in a broader variety of contexts, including among others interpersonal communication, small group communication, and intercultural communication.

The department's major is designed to enable students to pursue their interests passionately and in-depth. However, we are also committed to a philosophy that emphasizes both depth and breadth of study and, accordingly, the curriculum requires majors to enroll in courses that span the various areas of inquiry. Thus, majors explore the rhetorical and communicative dimensions of performance and the performative dimensions of rhetoric and communication.

Physics is the study of the fundamental principles that govern the entire natural world, from the atomic nucleus and elementary particles to the dimensions of the universe and the search for dark energy. Our students investigate these principles in small classes with emphasis on lab experiences, and many opportunities for faculty-led research. Our students learn how government works not only in theory but also in practice, often through internships and other opportunities in cities like Washington, DC, and Ottawa, Canada, just 90 minutes away. The focus is both domestic and foreign, and examines issues of power and justice.

A major in political science prepares students for careers in the law, foreign service, international relations, cultural or economic development anywhere in the world, journalism, elective office and many others. Our recent graduates have been accepted to masters programs at Cornell, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, and Syracuse University, and have also attended law school at the universities of Connecticut, Michigan, and Vermont (to name a few).

On July 1, 2021, Kathryn A. Morris became the 19th president of St. Lawrence University. President Morris has dedicated her life to higher education and chose to become a professor because she understood the impact of teaching and mentoring on students’ lives. She arrived at St. Lawrence following a distinguished career at Butler University, where she had most recently served as the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs for eight years. Prior to her time as provost, President Morris served as a professor of psychology and was chair of that department at Butler. Her areas of expertise include social psychology, the psychology of gender, methodology, and statistics.

Why do people think and behave the way they do? St. Lawrence’s psychology department takes a broad approach to answering this question, offering courses on diverse topics such as the brain and behavior, sensation and perception, learning, development, personality, abnormal psychology, and social behavior. You can also explore the application of psychology through courses on sport, community, clinical, cultural, legal, and environmental psychology.

Many of our students work one-on-one with faculty mentors on collaborative research projects. Recently, our students have conducted studies on memory and trauma, nanoparticles, learning, virtual reality, infant communication, coach-athlete relationships, sleep and hoarding, and juror decision-making.

Our graduates work in a variety of settings, such as schools, counseling centers, businesses, and not-for-profit agencies. Some obtain their graduate degree in areas such as social work, teaching, physical therapy, mental health counseling, school psychology, law, and nursing.

Our religious studies program educates students about the diversity of religious worlds and diversity within religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, Shinto, and religion in the United States. The Sullivan Student Center is a place where students come to spend time between classes, study, and hold both meetings and late night events. There are a variety of small spaces with comfy chairs and tables for studying and lounging. In addition, meeting rooms are available for group meetings and other activities. Also available to students is the Winston Room, which is the largest programming space in the building. The space is often used for large events such as lectures, showcases, comedians, movie showings, and dances.

Besides being a great place to connect with your classmates, the Student Center is the home of many departments and services on campus. On the lowest level you can access the Student Mail Center (SMC) and your SMC mailbox. You can also head over to the Northstar Cafe and Jack's Corner to grab some food and snacks.

On the middle level of the Student Center you will be able to visit the Student Center Information Desk and a variety of offices such as the Student Life Office, Residence Life, Student Activities and Leadership, the Associate Dean's Office, and Center for Career Excellence. Located on the third floor is the Student Financial Services office, and the Office of Wellness Education.

The Student Center has a variety of rooms that are available for students, faculty and staff to reserve for various events and meetings.
