The Mission of the Adirondack Semester is to enable students to study nature and human relationships with nature through academic classes enriched by direct experience. The Semester takes place at Arcadia, an off-the-grid yurt village in the heart of the Adirondacks. The goals of the program are to foster a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the natural world, to create a vibrant living and learning community at Arcadia, and to cultivate a strong connection to the Adirondack region.

Advocates is a support system for survivors and peers of survivors of sexual assault, relationship, and domestic violence and abuse and stalking. Aware trained advocates run a 24/7 helpline where we can provide support and answer questions. Our main objective is to direct members to services on and off-campus. We work to raise awareness about these issues, such as consent education, and services that are available.

Every semester the student Advocates organization runs an awareness training program, modeled after the federal program. Conversations are confidential, but we are trained to direct survivors/ peers of survivors to resources and offer support.

Want to see the world in a different way? Then check out anthropology! As an anthropology student, the whole human world, past and present, will be your subject. You will get the tools you need to understand all aspects of the human experience, from our DNA to the languages we speak to the artifacts we make, from the beginnings of primate evolution to the contemporary era of rich cultural diversity.

Our majors and minors choose from a broad range of courses in archaeology, cultural anthropology, linguistic anthropology, and biological anthropology. Our majors also complete an experiential learning component which can involve study abroad, independent research, community-based learning, or an internship. Our graduates put their anthropological skills to use in many different settings: schools and universities, government agencies, private companies, and non-profit organizations.

Our faculty members have done research in Egypt, India, Indonesia, Namibia, Sudan, and upstate New York, and we mentor student research in many other places both at home and abroad. Our teaching and research laboratories house several collections of artifacts as well as human skeletal materials and ancient bone and fossil casts for hands-on study. We hope to see you in our classes!

The SLU Anthropology Club strives to spread knowledge of the discipline, and
engage those already interested through extracurricular activities. Our goal is to
cultivate relationships between students and faculty on campus to guide students
further in their careers and interests. We aim to expose members to the four
subdisciplines of anthropology: biological, linguistic, cultural, and archaeology in
various ways to enhance students’ knowledge of the field and promote cultural
awareness and acceptability, both on and off campus.

The Arabic Club is an organization founded and operating on the campus of St. Lawrence University. Our club brings together people interested in learning more about the Arab world through language & cultural experiences. We attempt to break false stereotypes and bridge the cultural divides that separate us. The Arab Culture Club is centered on activities designed to provide students and the college community with ba etter understanding of the Arab language. This is done through a variety of events such as: Middle Eastern expert speakers, dance workshops (belly dancing), henna art, Oud events, game nights, film screening, etc.

The study of art & art history is central to a liberal arts education, especially in a world increasingly shaped by images and seemingly endless visual information. The Department of Art & Art History makes rich contributions to St. Lawrence’s liberal arts curriculum. While studio art courses involve creativity and the physical or conceptual production of artworks, art history courses engage students in the interpretation of art from many different regions and times.

Members of the Arts Annex have a range of interests across the fine arts. This house is made up of singers, dancers, musicians, writers, painters, and more. Members of this house are known for hosting open mics and "stoop shows" on their front porch.

Biology majors at St. Lawrence University have access to an exciting variety of options. As a student, you can utilize laboratories in the LEED Gold-Certified, Johnson Hall of Science. You can study outdoors in the woods or on a local lake in northern New York, or even in another country. Do you want to conduct real-world research and also enjoy the liberal arts college experience? You can definitely do so in the Biology department at St. Lawrence University, with some of the best faculty in their fields.

Students in our biology program study the breadth of the life sciences: from ecology and organismal biology to cellular and molecular biology. A biology degree from St. Lawrence can lead to careers in environmental conservation, science education, research, medicine, physical therapy, and other health industries.

St. Lawrence has also developed quite the reputation among graduate schools and health professional programs like Syracuse, Dartmouth, Albany College of Pharmacy and Penn, as well as biotechnology companies. St. Lawrence has agreements with the SUNY Buffalo School of Pharmacy, the Nursing Program at NYU, the Physician’s Assistant Program at Clarkson, and the Physical Therapy Program at Clarkson for students to pursue a combined degree.

Did you know that St. Lawrence is located only about 75 miles from a national capital? Ottawa, home of the Canadian parliament, is just a hop, skip and a bridge away for St. Lawrence students to discover. Our proximity to Canada allows our students to explore and understand our closest international neighbor, and how Canada offers an alternative shared history, other ways of seeing things and another understanding of how to be North American.

Combine Canadian studies with another program such as history, government or English and take the opportunity to find out more about our neighbor to the north. Also, take advantage of opportunities to study in Canada in cities like Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City and Toronto.

Carefree Black Girls is a safe space for women of color and allies to discuss social justice issues
occurring in society and to foster self-development within women of color on campus. The purpose
of Carefree Black Girls is to promote a sense of unity among women of color in order to confront
issues of diversity on the St. Lawrence campus. Carefree Black Girls is not only a space for women
of color but also allows for the expansion of diversity and inclusion for the University by creating a
space where students from all walks of life may come to interact with and learn about different
cultures, lifestyles, and issues other groups may face. We, at Carefree Black Girls, seek to also push
the prioritization on mental health among our members and provide resources and outlets for
women who might be struggling. Carefree Black Girls intends to provide a common and effective
voice on matters that concern women of color on and off campus, while establishing and
maintaining meaningful relationships within our minority community.
