The Mission of the Adirondack Semester is to enable students to study nature and human relationships with nature through academic classes enriched by direct experience. The Semester takes place at Arcadia, an off-the-grid yurt village in the heart of the Adirondacks. The goals of the program are to foster a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the natural world, to create a vibrant living and learning community at Arcadia, and to cultivate a strong connection to the Adirondack region.

Advocates is a support system for survivors and peers of survivors of sexual assault, relationship, and domestic violence and abuse and stalking. Aware trained advocates run a 24/7 helpline where we can provide support and answer questions. Our main objective is to direct members to services on and off-campus. We work to raise awareness about these issues, such as consent education, and services that are available.

Every semester the student Advocates organization runs an awareness training program, modeled after the federal program. Conversations are confidential, but we are trained to direct survivors/ peers of survivors to resources and offer support.

Want to see the world in a different way? Then check out anthropology! As an anthropology student, the whole human world, past and present, will be your subject. You will get the tools you need to understand all aspects of the human experience, from our DNA to the languages we speak to the artifacts we make, from the beginnings of primate evolution to the contemporary era of rich cultural diversity.

Our majors and minors choose from a broad range of courses in archaeology, cultural anthropology, linguistic anthropology, and biological anthropology. Our majors also complete an experiential learning component which can involve study abroad, independent research, community-based learning, or an internship. Our graduates put their anthropological skills to use in many different settings: schools and universities, government agencies, private companies, and non-profit organizations.

Our faculty members have done research in Egypt, India, Indonesia, Namibia, Sudan, and upstate New York, and we mentor student research in many other places both at home and abroad. Our teaching and research laboratories house several collections of artifacts as well as human skeletal materials and ancient bone and fossil casts for hands-on study. We hope to see you in our classes!

The study of art & art history is central to a liberal arts education, especially in a world increasingly shaped by images and seemingly endless visual information. The Department of Art & Art History makes rich contributions to St. Lawrence’s liberal arts curriculum. While studio art courses involve creativity and the physical or conceptual production of artworks, art history courses engage students in the interpretation of art from many different regions and times.

Members of the Arts Annex have a range of interests across the fine arts. This house is made up of singers, dancers, musicians, writers, painters, and more. Members of this house are known for hosting open mics and "stoop shows" on their front porch.

The Arts Annex is also home to the music library on campus, which is open to the entire University community to use as a resource.

The Barista’s purpose is to promote safe drinking on campus through planning and hosting alternative events, primarily on the weekends. The Barista spreads awareness and education about safe partying as well as alcohol and drug awareness. In doing so, The Barista provides safe and dry places for students to comfortably have fun, relax, spend time with peers and contribute to the community. The Baristas’ theme house, The Lounge, has weekly events for students and friends to join. The house is also recognized as a dry space where students will not be exposed to the peer pressures of abusing alcohol, smoking and illegal substances. The Barista additionally strives to provide a culture of positive health and wellness throughout the campus community through a Mental Health Chair who will work to create wellness events and opportunities for mental health education and advocacy on campus.

Biology majors at St. Lawrence University have access to an exciting variety of options. As a student, you can utilize laboratories in the LEED Gold-Certified, Johnson Hall of Science. You can study outdoors in the woods or on a local lake in northern New York, or even in another country. Do you want to conduct real-world research and also enjoy the liberal arts college experience? You can definitely do so in the Biology department at St. Lawrence University, with some of the best faculty in their fields.

Students in our biology program study the breadth of the life sciences: from ecology and organismal biology to cellular and molecular biology. A biology degree from St. Lawrence can lead to careers in environmental conservation, science education, research, medicine, physical therapy, and other health industries.

St. Lawrence has also developed quite the reputation among graduate schools and health professional programs like Syracuse, Dartmouth, Albany College of Pharmacy and Penn, as well as biotechnology companies. St. Lawrence has agreements with the SUNY Buffalo School of Pharmacy, the Nursing Program at NYU, the Physician’s Assistant Program at Clarkson, and the Physical Therapy Program at Clarkson for students to pursue a combined degree.

The Richard F. Brush Art Gallery aims to strengthen community by creating a sense of belonging for all who visit, teach, and learn in its spaces, both physically and virtually.
